Asset Managers Vie for Share of Mutual Fund Pie in China
With new market entrants including securities firms, individual-owned mutual fund managers, and foreign managers, China’s mutual fund industry has entered into a phase of accelerated expansion and intense competition, particularly since 2022. All market participants will need to play to their own advantages to win greater shares of assets.
Given their late entry to the mutual fund industry, securities asset management companies need to build strong investment and research capabilities to enhance their core competitiveness. Likewise, foreign managers need to demonstrate the advantages of their investment methods relative to those of local firms and find their niche areas, given their relatively weak distribution channels and as local players’ investment processes catch up.Meanwhile, individual-owned managers are expanding at a faster rate than the industry, although their marketshare is relatively low. Cerulli recommends individual-owned mutual fund managers make use of stock ownership and equity incentive plans to attract talent, while securities asset management firms should put in efforts to hire experienced fund managers, giving them more flexibility in stock selection, and build mature investment and research models.
