Opportunities have re-emerged in the U.S. offshore market, which had been in a steady decline through the 2010s. At $150 billion, the U.S. offshore market has soared as affluent Latin Americans move assets out of their home countries due to pandemic-induced policies, the crippled state of regional economies, and low yields on local fixed-income bonds. Given this panorama, the U.S. offshore market has come back into vogue as a desirable safe haven for wealth preservation.
Winning product categories
In early 2021, fund categories that stood out were flexible bond funds investing in various debt instruments, such as high-yield and emerging markets bonds, as well as short-duration and global currency bonds. The next biggest draw for U.S. offshore clients was thematic and sector-oriented equity funds, followed by Asian equity funds and European equity funds. Environmental, social, governance (ESG) interest is also gaining steam.
